Academic Editing We may well make the difference between a poor, a good and an excellent article, dissertation or thesis

Master's and PhD Publications

Completing an article, to say nothing of a Master's or PhD dissertation or thesis, could be the most challenging task of your educational career. Ensuring that your publication has been thoroughly edited is likely to make the difference between a first- and a second-class pass. At Expert English Editors we specialise in making sure that your work meets the standards expected of Master's and PhD students.

What We Offer

We edit these documents for what we term the 5 Cs: Clarity, Concord, Congruence, Consistency and Correctness in English language and logic. We check the presentation (formatting) of bibliographic items; while we can cross-check the correlation between items in the main body and the bibliography, we charge at least R14 per item, dependent on the job and time frames. However, we prefer that clients do this themselves using software such as Recite, RefWorks or Endnotes. We do not take responsibility for the final results as these are dependent on variables such as the client’s CPU, internet connectivity, word processing application used and the like.

We do not undertake major formatting, which we outsource to an expert in MSWord, nor do we supervise or rewrite any document, but we will comment extensively where necessary.

What We Promise

You will be assured of excellent, focused and timely service; an unequalled awareness of what goes into an academic document at every level, and consequently a sharp, constructive eye for possibly inadequate work; a consciousness of the importance of deadlines and other nuances of preparing a scholarly piece of research; an empathetic understanding of the challenges of academic enquiry.

How We Charge For Our Editing Services

We offer competitive rates especially for our clients paying in non-South African currencies. Our rates are positioned in the average range of the spectrum, based on the annual pricing surveys carried out by SAFREA, the South African Media Freelancers’ Association, and PEG, the Professional Editors’ Group. We generally quote in SA cents per word (this is an accurate, straightforward unit of measure), subject to seeing the actual document and an annual increase towards the end of each year. Graphics, graphs etc. are not included in the word count and hence not charged for, though text boxes and footnotes are. Special quotes may also be possible.

Major formatting of heading levels, ToCs and the like is not included in this price.

The service we provide is value for money: it is thorough and meticulous. Editing is highly specialised and labour-intensive and a thorough double edit (reading the document at least twice but usually more often, concentrating on different facets) of five A4 pages or about 1500 words takes 45 minutes to an hour.
